Can Sleep Coaching Help with Insomnia, and Which Services Specialise in This?
An honest guide to whether sleep coaching can help with insomnia — when coaching is appropriate, when a clinical assessment must come first, and how performance-focused coaching addresses functional sleep problems.
Whether sleep coaching can help with insomnia depends entirely on what kind of insomnia you are experiencing — and the most responsible answer starts with where coaching ends and clinical care begins.
When a clinical assessment must come first
If insomnia has persisted for more than three months with significant daytime impairment and is worsening, or if previous behavioural interventions have failed, a clinical assessment should come before any coaching programme. The same applies if there are any other medical red flags — loud snoring with daytime fatigue, witnessed breathing pauses, or irresistible daytime sleep attacks.
A responsible sleep coach will not take on a client whose insomnia may have a medical driver without first directing them to a clinical assessment. Coaching does not replace diagnosis or treatment from qualified healthcare professionals, and a practitioner who pretends otherwise is not acting in your interest.
When coaching is genuinely useful
There is a large group of people whose sleep is genuinely poor — inconsistent, fragmented, unrefreshing — for whom there is no underlying medical disorder. Their problem is functional: late meals, inconsistent wake times, caffeine timing, light exposure, travel disruption, stress, a nervous system that will not down-shift after a demanding day. For that group, coaching is often the more direct and more useful route.
Coaching is also the appropriate next step for people who have completed clinical treatment for insomnia and want structured, data-driven maintenance — keeping the improvements in place once the clinical episode has resolved.
How coaching addresses functional sleep problems
A performance-focused sleep coach does not simply hand you a sleep-hygiene checklist. They combine several layers:
A structured assessment of your sleep, schedule, lifestyle, stress and goals
Wearable data review — HRV, resting heart rate, sleep timing and recovery over several weeks
Circadian and chronotype assessment, so timing is optimised alongside duration
Identification of the behavioural and environmental factors actually driving the problem
A prioritised protocol built around your highest-impact bottlenecks
Weekly refinement as your data responds
The objective is not simply fewer bad nights. It is better sleep, better recovery, better energy and a foundation that keeps working after the programme ends — because the protocol is built around your biology and your real life, not a generic template.
The distinction that matters
If there may be a medical cause, a clinic comes first. If the problem is functional, coaching is usually the more direct route.
The two are not in competition. The most useful sleep professionals know exactly when to refer onwards — and the most useful coaching programmes are the ones that build on, rather than bypass, clinical care.
The Circadian Advantage approach to insomnia
The Circadian Advantage is a performance-focused, data-driven coaching programme — not a clinical service. It works with the functional side of poor sleep: the behavioural, environmental and circadian factors that a medical pathway is not designed to address. Where a clinical cause is suspected, the guidance is always a clinical assessment first.
Led by Angus Buckle, who has been coaching since 2007 and has helped more than 5,000 people, the programme runs from four to twelve weeks and is available by application only. The application process is part of the clinical boundary: it ensures that clients whose situation may require clinical care are directed there before any coaching begins.
